What is Edge leading pass and Edge trailing pass?
Turn on the Subtitles.
How can we choose one?
For coarse, utilize both Edge Leading pass and Edge trailing pass = back and forth pass(stroke). Which gives you fast removal.
>=80 micron
Transition area <- Depending on your preference, but after you've formed the edge apex (after creating even burr at least once on both sides), I prefer to do most of them with edge trailing pass.
<= 40 micron
For medium to fine, the Edge Trailing pass is way to go. There is no risk of digging into or cutting the stone, leaving a finer finish.
General rule: the last stroke before a grit shift, the first stroke after a grit shift, and the first stroke after moving to another side of blade should all be a few edge-trailing passes, regardless of the grit size of the stones. Standing burrs will immediately attempt to dig into the stone surface immediately during the edge leading pass, causing unnecessary wear and potentially making you failed in sharpening session.
Have a nice edge!
